5:16 Why is this logo part of the first section? It's for the Eurovision Song Contest itself, not Eurovision Network (like the first two logos) Eurovision Network was still using the "corporate" logo until 2012, then switched to their present logo which isn't even in this video.

I used to live in Hammersmith & Fulham for many years. When I moved there in the early 90s, the logo was some bland rubbish with a tagline about 'serving our community'. Who else were they going to serve, FFS, Newcastle's? Then there was a change in the political complexion of the borough, the Conservatives were in charge and introduced the current logo, but in green and blue (that's to say, the Conservative colours), the borough returned to Labour a few years later.....and the logo was modified to red and grey. I'm no lover of the Conservatives, but Labour should have left well enough alone.....

The 2018 Lisbon had amazing visuals. I found it more interesting than the examples from the 2010s you gave. But overall good progression

Excellent video! However, the statement at 3:25 isnt entirely correct. While English is far less strict about it than Chinese, there is a 'correct' prder and way to write letters. In additional to being important in a learning setting, some calligraphy fonts and forms of cursive require specific stroke orders and styles in order to even be legible!

While the logos and theme art remain interesting, I HATE that Liverpool 2023's slogan "United by Music" has been stolen and co-opted by the EBU as the defacto slogan for all shows going forward. Not only does that take away creative choice from design teams looking pair the theme art with a bespoke slogan, but "United by Music" was chosen very specifically for the context of Liverpool having to host the contest on Ukraine's behalf due to the war. Take it away from that context and it becames stale and generic.

The fact that Aurora Borealis was visible from near enough the entirety of the UK for two whole days makes the comment about Malmo being too far south kinda hilarious.

I watched another video showcasing the Eurovision Song Contest logos about 5 years ago, and that actually got me into Eurovision.

I mean, the aroura can sometimes be seen quite far south (was just visible here in seattle the day before this was posted)

9:53 as great as this logo is, I think we all just have to accept that four-way rotational symmetry was ruined by a certain German political party in the first half of the 20th century. Once they get hold of something, you can't get it back.

As an American I've never had much exposure to Eurovision (I only just found out yesterday that Céline Dion's international career was launched by her winning 1988 performance!), but I always appreciate your design insights and it was fun to take a trip through design history while learning about Eurovision along the way. I also really appreciate you providing high quality captions, which unfortunately even some creators with millions of subscribers fail to do--it really makes a big difference in intelligibility compared to the autogenerated ones, particularly for specialized language! I did want to point out a few points for correction, though. As a Eurovision fan, thank you for this! And thanks for inviting a fellow fan to explain these things. I wanted to ask last year, when the contest was held in Liverpool, if you could do a design review of all the participating broadcasters's logos. Watching clips of Eurovision performances from before made me fascinated by the idents that always appear on the top or bottom of the screen.

While I didn’t watch the contest this year due to ethical reasons, this was a really fun and interesting video that really taught me a lot about the history of its style.

Funnily enough, due to the incredibly strong solar storm yesterday and the day before yesterday, the Northern Lights could be seen as far as the Alps. So, the Aurora Borealis theme was actually very much on point.

I was working at one of the Eurovision venues in Malmö this year. (Got home a couple of hours ago lol) We actually got a faint aurora during the event.

This was so interesting! I never noticed, that there were so many different logos. I think the butterflies were my favourite.

It was very interesting seeing you and Fernand go through these logos, I was very much unaware of what Eurovision looks like in general, let alone before 2004. It's fascinating to see how many of the logos / art styles are a reflection of the periods they were used in. To me it really exposes how Eurovision helps shape the aesthetics we associate with those periods. The 1985 logo is the most obvious example to where it almost feels like a parody today, but the 1997/2000 have a distinct cybertech-ish feel that would fit right in with that Matrix-y vibe. Going back a little further, those 1970s logos used for the Dutch festivals feel really, REALLY 1970s to me. Even the more modern styles you guys highlighted (ones that that I consciously lived through myself) really LOOK and FEEL like they are "of that time". 2007 is almost a perfect reflection of what the internet/computer aesthetics felt like in that era - the Myspace era right before modern social media, platforms like ICQ giving way to Skype, a "macromedia flash"-like quality to the animations. It ties in a little with a late "frutiger aero" aesthetic. 2011 gives off those quintessential talent show TV program vibes - it looks and feels exactly like generic swipey text effects for an American Idol/America's Got Talent style television ad. My favorite might actually be Dublin 1995 though, it looks like a logo for a jazz festival, not Eurovision.
